Tips for Success
Even with the value and guidance of an external consultant, there are any number of things that organizations can do to focus and develop their supervisors, managers and executives.
- Tip #1
Rather than a replying with a quick yes or no when your employees or managers ask to attend a workshop or conference, ask them a few simple questions first:
- How does this fit with the developmental plan you created for this year?
- Why do you think that this workshop is the best option for you?
- What do you hope to change or improve as a result of your attendance?
- How can I best support your ongoing development efforts?
- Tip #2
Facilitate a discussion on leadership & management development at one of your upcoming management meetings, in order to identify significant needs & opportunities. Use some variation of the following questions:
- What management & leadership skills will we need to further develop to realize the strategic goals and objectives we have identified for the coming year or two?
- On a scale of 0 – 5, how effective are our leadership & management development efforts? What one thing would help us to become much stronger leaders?
- What one management or leadership development experience have you found to be the most significant experience in your career to date? How might we replicate that for others in our group?
- Tip #3
Take care of a significant issue faced by your organization while feeding the career interests of your best people. Pull a cross-functional team of your best people from your organization, and ask them to help the organization while developing their career. Pose the issue at hand, and ask them to study the situation and come back with a recommendation in two months. Their actions will be more successful if you clearly define the problem, identify your problem solving process, and respond to their recommendations.
